Paul Baas M.D.

Dr Paul Baas is senior staff member in the department of Thoracic Oncology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. Dr. Baas gained his medical degree in 1986 from the University of Amsterdam and trained for chest physician at the Free University. He holds a PhD degree in Applied Medicine at the University of Amsterdam and has been appointed as a Professor in Thoracic Oncology at the University Hospital of Leiden. He has published 350 peer reviewed papers and is involved in the several cancer research groups like the, ETOP, EORTC and ESMO. Since 1992, he has focused on introduction of new treatment applications and studies in patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma. He was the PI of the world-wide randomized phase III study of dual IO therapy versus chemotherapy, which has altered the standard of care of patients with mesothelioma. He is involved in the guidelines of ESMO of both NSCLC and Mesothelioma.

He has been active in the support of patients with mesothelioma for many years and initiated a foundation for the care of patients and their caretakers in December 2023 because of the austerity measures in the Dutch health care system.
